That singing of two lines in “Bhakt Prahlad” did a lot of good for Geetaji. She kept herself busy singing in several movies that year (1946). But her biggest breakthrough was yet to come and fortunately for Geetaji and music lovers it didn’t take long.

The two lines Geetaji sang, with a voice full of vivacity and spontaneity, did not go unnoticed on other music directors. Soon she had assignments started pouring in. Apart from “Bhakt Prahlad” she worked in at least six other films during that year. She did a full solo in the movie “Kashmir Ki Kali” for music directors Kavita Devi and Master Vithal. Hanuman Prasadji gave Geetaji a chance to sing a full solo for another movie he provided music for, called “Rasili”. Music director pair J. Abhyankar and Nagesh Rao had Geeta sing a solo for the movie “Circus King”. She also sang a solo song in “Pujya Gandhiji”. But one of the bigger name music directors she was able to sing the same year was Anil Biswas. Even though Biswasji went with Lataji in later years, at least in the movie “Milan” he had Geetaji sing two solos. S.N. Tripathi, another music director who will employ Geetaji in several of his movies in subsequent years, had her sing a duet in “Manasarovar”.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1946, her debut year, is summarized in the following table. Please note that this information may not be complete.

This was 1947. An important year in many aspects. In the annals of the history of India, it got freedom from the British rule that year. It was also a great year in the life of Geetaji because she was spotted by S.D. Burman to sing few songs in his new movie. Burmanda, already an established film force and a respected music director, heard Geetaji’s two lines from the songs of her debut movie, “Bhakt Prahlad”. He got hold of her address and met her at her place. He decided to use her voice for his next film with Filmistan, “Do Bhai”, even though the producer of the film wasn’t sure about the choice. Burmanda had Geeta record a song and showed the results to the skeptical producer. Happy with what he heard he gave Burmanda go ahead to utilize Geetaji’s singing talents. The music of the film was a major hit. In particular, her song “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya” became an overnight sensation. Her voice was so fresh, unique and ethereal it appeared to have breathed life into those songs. The record sales of the album in general and that song in particular scaled new heights. Thanks to Geetaji’s songs, the movie became a huge box-office hit. For the next three years Geeta Roy was almost unchallenged and ruled as the number one playback singer in the Bombay film industry.

With the breakthrough “Do Bhai” provided, Geetaji was in great demand. She worked during that year at least in several movies. For “Do Bhai” she sang four solos and two duets. Burmanda also had another movie during that year called “Dil Ki Rani”. Bolstered by the confidence she provided with the singing in “Do Bhai”, he had Geetaji sing five solos in it. In the coming years, her association with Burmanda was going to take her into hitherto unchartered territories for good.

Another big name music directors she sang for in 1947 was C. Ramchandra. He composed music for “Leela” and “Sajan” during that year. In each of these movies Geetaji had two songs. “Leela” had her two solos and in “Sajan” she was part of the singers for two triplets.

She also sang for the music director Hansraj Behl in “Pehli Pahechan”. In the coming years, Behl also provided many opportunities for Geetaji to sing in his films. Then there was the music director Anil Biswas. Geetaji sang a solo and a duet for his movie “Milan”. Geetaji did sing some songs for Biswaji in the coming years, but surprisingly not as many. Biswaji went through Lata Mangeshkar route for most of his movies.

A.R. Qureshi had Geetaji sing two songs in “Malika”, both solos. Hanuman Prasad, Geetaji’s discoverer, had given her a solo in “Hip Hip Hurray”. She also sang a duet and two solos for Chitragupt in the movie “Jadui Rattan”.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1947 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information may not be not complete.

With the stardom achieved from the success of “Do Bhai”, Geetaji became extremely busy. Almost as if by magic, an obscure singer not known to many people across the country, became a celebrity and a household word overnight. As her record sales soared people swarmed restaurants and other meeting places to hear her singing as the radios played these songs.

Aware of what she was able to achieve in a relatively short period of time, producers and music directors started offering her plum assignments that took advantage of her singing talents. This overwhelming demand had Geetaji work in at least 12 movies in 1948. There were some familiar music directors who worked with her earlier and a few others who were working with her for the very first time.

In “Chunariya”, music director Hansraj Behl had Geetaji sing six songs. Four of these were solos and one was a duet. The sixth one had four singers including Geetaji. For “Heer Ranjha” music director Khayyam had her sing five solos. Burmanda had Geetaji sing two songs in his “Shabnam”. Both of these were duets. The other movies she sang for in 1948 include music director D.C. Dutt’s “Anjana” (a solo), maestro Prem Nath’s “Chand Sitare” (three solos), Gyan Dutt’s “Chand Ki Chandni” (two solos), a solo in the movie “Harischandra”, two solos in “Hua Savera”, two songs in Ghulam Haider’s “Majboor” (a solo and a duet), Chitragupt’s “Mala The Mighty” (a solo), and K. Dutta’s “Meri Kahani” (three solos and a duet).

For Nashad (Shaukat Ali Dehalvi) Geetaji sang in two movies. These were “jeene Do” (six solos) and “Toote Taare” ( two solos and two duets).

Geetaji sang a solo song for “Chandralekha”. Its music was composed by S. Rajeshwara Rao a famous music director from South who provided music for countless movies in Telugu and some in Tamil. “Chandralekha” was a magnum opus of Gemini Studios. The origanl movie was in Tamil and it was dubbed into Hindi and Telugu. The dubbed version also was runaway hit. Actor Ranjan was introduced to Hindi audience in this movie.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1948 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information may not be not complete.

With two great years in succession, Geetaji became the undisputed number one singer in the nation. She was virtually unchallenged at this juncture in her career. The hitherto established singers like Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum were relegated to lower spots. There was only one spot at the top and that belonged to Geetaji. At least for now!

Geetaji was busy like a bee during 1949. She sang many scores of songs during that year in at least 25 different movies. Again, she performed for several big name music directors and some new ones. But irrespective of who she was performing for, whether well known or hardly known, she sang every song with the same zeal and enthusiasm that were very characteristics of her success.

Some of the music directors she worked in 1949 include Anil Biswas, Husnlal & Bhagatram, C. Ramchandra, Naushad, Vinod, Ghulam Mohammed, Gyan Dutt, Hansraj Behl, Krishna Dayal, Bulo C. Rani, and S.D. Burman.

Geetaji sang for Husnlal & Bhagatram in six movies in 1949. These were “Amar Kahani” (two solos), “Bansuriya” (two solos), “Hamari Manzil” (four solos, a duet, and a triplet), “Naach” (a triplet), “Rakhi” (two solos) and “Sawan Bhadon” (two solos).

C. Ramchandra gave music to three movies in 1949 in which Geetaji sang. These were “Roshni”, “Sanwariya”, and “Sipahiya”. In all these movies Geetaji sang a duet.

Hansraj Bhel provided music for six movies in 1949 in which Geetaji sang. These were “Chakori” (four solos), “Kaneez” (two solos), “Karwat” (two solos and two duets), “Raat Ki Rani” (a solo and a duet), and “Zevraat” (three solos).

Geetaji worked in three movies for Bulo C. Rani in 1949. These were “Bhool Bhulaiya” (two solos), “Darogaji” (11 solos and a duet), and “Nazare” (a duet). For “Darogaji” Geetaji sang all of the songs. This was a record for that time. In future, her association with Raniji was going to yield many more dividends as Geetaji was going to be his staple singer.

In two movies for which he provided music, Ghulam Mohammed ji gave Geetaji 10 songs to sing. In “Dil Ki Basti” she had three solos and four duets. In “Paras” she had a solo and two duets.

Once again Geetaji worked for S.D. Burman during 1949 in two movies. These were “Kamal” ( a solo and two duets) and “Shabnam” (a solo and three duets). More than anyone else, it was Burmanda who molded Geetaji’s career by giving her choice songs of different styles that took advantage of her mellifluous voice to a maximum.

Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1949 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information may not be not complete.

1950 found Geeta Roy in a tough spot. The undisputed reigning singing sensation and queen she was for the past three years (1947 to 1949), she suddenly found herself relegated to the second position. It was the onslaught of Lata Mangeshkar wave that took the country by storm. Lataji who was also a struggling singer trying to get a foothold in the fickle industry, suddenly had not one, or two, but three back-to-back blockbuster hits in 1949. It was Mehboob Khan’s “Andaaz” with music by Naushadji, and a dashing young actor who was destined to become The Showman, Raj Kapoor’s “Barsaat” which had music by a pair of new, young, and trailblazing youngsters named Shankar and Jaikishan, and Kamal Amrohi’s “Mahal” with music given by Khemchand Prakash that had so many numbers that became chartbusters and contributed to this success. The haunting melody “Aayega Aanewaala” by Lataji from “Mahal” even today reverberates in the hearts of millions of moviegoers and for good reasons.

Lataji’s climb to the top was not unexpected and least surprising. She came from a rich musical background and was well trained in music and singing. When she got her break into the movies, just about the same as Geetaji, everybody knew that she will achieve lofty goals and scale to new heights. The question was how long will it take for her to accomplish this. It happened so quickly was a surprise. Lataji has to thank not just her background and training but also these three smashing hits that happened in the same year. With this unfamiliar situation facing her, Geetaji went unperturbed with her business, that is singing. She took the second spot as graciously as she reigned the top spot. It takes a special human being to come out of these unexpected calamities unscathed. Geetaji was a very special person indeed. Her capacity to be both sensual and sensitive at the same time when singing her songs always gave her an edge over her competition. She could breath life and emotion into any song she sang.

In spite of the competition she faced, 1950 was a great year for Geetaji. She worked in several movies during the year and had more songs recorded than any year before this. Two of these had music by Hansraj Behl, who trusted her voice the previous year (1949) by having Geetaji sing in six movies for him. The two movies were “Khamosh Sipahi” (four songs; three duets and one a triplet) and “Kisi Ki Yaad” (three songs; a solo, a duet, and a triplet).

She also worked for Vasant Desai in the movie “Sheesh Mahal”. In this movie she sang three songs (two duets and a triplet).

“Jogan” was one of her great movies of 1950. Its music was by Bulo C. Rani, who had Geetaji sing an unprecedented 12 songs in “Darogaji” the previous year. This time also Rani ji was as generous. He had Geetaji sing once again 12 songs out of which 11 were solos and one a duet. Rani ji was the one who gave first majot hit to Mukeshji in “Moorty” in 1945. In “Jogan” Geetaji sang six Meera bhajans. These included smash hits like “Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol”, “Main To Giridhar Ke Ghar Jaaoon”, “Damag Damag Dole Naiyya”, and other songs.

“Dilruba” was another movie in which Geetaji sang bulk of the songs, in this case nine of them. Of these seven were solos and two duets. Gyan Dutt was the music director of “Dilruba”. In Khurshid Anwar’s “Nishana” Geetaji sang six solos.

She sang in a couple of movies for Tripathiji. These were “Saudamini” (two solos) and “Shri Ganesh Mahima” (four solos and a duet).

For S.D. Burman, Geetaji sang a total of seven songs in three different movies. In “Afsar” she had a duet. In “Mashaal” she sang a solo. In “Pyaar” she had three solos and two duets.

She had a banner year with the music director duo Husnlal & Bhagatram. She sang a total of 13 songs in five different movie for them. In “Aadhi Raat” she had two duets. She sang two solos in “Birha Ki Raat”. In “Gauna” she sang a solo and a triplet. She had a solo in “Pyar Ki Manzil”. In “Surajmukhi” she had four solos and two duets.

Khemchnad Prakash was another music director for whom Geetaji sang in multiple movies. In this case two; “Bijli” (a solo) and “Jaan Pehchaan” (four solos and a duet).

The other music directors for which she sang during 1950 include Avinash Vyas ( three solos in “Har Har Mahadev”.), Basant Prakash (a solo in “Machalti Haseena”), D.C. Dutt (two solos in “Aahuti”), Ghulam Mohammed (two duets in “Maang”), Kala & Parthasarathy (two solos in “Mangala”), Khayyam (three solos and a duet in “Beewee”), Krishna Dayal (two solos and a duet in “Baawra”), Robin Chatterjee (a solo in “Insaaf Kahan Hai”), Roshan (a duet in “Bawre Nain”), S.B. Pathak (two solos in “Janmashtami”), Sajjad Hussain (a solo in “Khel”), and Snehal Bhatkar (a duet in “Hamari Beti”).

It was not unusual for Geetaji to sing a number of songs for the same movie during these happy years of her life. She has earned this kind of trust and respect from her music directors by putting all her soul into each song she sang for them.
