Roshan

Roshan Lal Nagrath (1917 – 1967), better known simply by his first name Roshan, is a legendary Hindi film music composer. During his career spanning 20 odd years, most notable quality of his music was the melody. He had his own style of music and never compromised with the quality of his music. Nor did he ever play to the gallery. He is especially remembered for the music which he rendered for qawwalis.

Producer director Kidar Sharma gave Roshan his first break with the music for the film Neki aur Badi (1949). In spite of the commercial failure of this film, Sharma entrusted Roshan with another assignment for his next film Baware Nain (1950) starring Geeta Bali and Raj Kapoor. This was a musical and commercial hit and truly launched Roshan as a leading composer. All the songs for the heroine were sung by singer Rajkumari Dubey, yet the most popular song of the film, Roshan’s first hit, was a duet sung by Mukesh and Geeta Dutt “Khayalon mein kisi ke isi tarhe aaya nahin karate” filmed on Raj Kapoor and the second heroine Vijayalaxmi. Till today, this is one of the most popular duets of Geeta Dutt and finds place on most of the CD compilations.

Another Geeta Bali starrer Bedardi released the next year had some memorable melodies sung by Geeta. “Do pyaar ki baatein ho jaaye” is a sweet romantic number, whereas “More tumse ho ho tore mujhse ulajh gaye naina” is another free flowing light song. Six years later the music for the film Agra Road (1957) composed by Roshan had as many as six songs (five duets and a solo) sung by Geeta, yet the score of Bedardi is probably the best showcase of Geeta’s talent under Roshan’s baton. One can gauge the sincerity of the feelings when Geeta sings “Aankhon se poonchh lo ke jinhe intezaar hain, kaise main saaf kah doon mujhe tumse pyar hain”! Those were the days when love was expressed without actually expressing it!

Between Bedardi and Agra Road, we have a solitary female duet (with Lata ji) sung by Geeta for Roshan for another Kidar Sharma production “Rangeen Raaten” starring his favorite actress Geeta Bali and Shammi Kapoor with Mala Sinha.

For Agra Road (1957), we have Mohd. Rafi and Geeta Dutt doing a bit of yodeling in “Unse rippy-tippy ho gayi, yaane baat pakki ho gayi”. Another unique feature of the song is that the first stanza is in Hindi, the next one in Gujarati and the last one in Punjabi. A totally funny song! Then we have the romantic “Duniya ki nazar hain buri, zulfen na sawaraa karo” and “Gazab hua raam dil kho baithe” from Mohd. Rafi and Geeta. Manna Dey comes in with Geeta in another fun song “Oh mister oh mister sunoh ek baat”. This is a typical man vs. woman song of the fifties (the most popular being “Lara lappa” from Ek thi Ladki).

It seems like Roshan-Geeta Bali-Geeta Dutt team was a winning combination, at least till 1957! Here we have another Geeta Bali, Shammi Kapoor starrer released the same year with the evergreen Geeta Dutt song “Is mehfil mein aana bachake”. The real pick out of the three songs she sang for this film is “Jhoom jhoom ke jaam choom ke aa dil ki mehfil mein aa”. You can feel the zing, the “Nashaa” and the rhythm in her voice!

Few more songs of Geeta Dutt were composed by Roshan in the following years but most of them were duets. The magic of “Khayalon mein kisi ke” was unfortunately missing! The last song she sang for him was a duet with legendary Manna Dey “Binati suno mori awadh puri ke basaiyya” for the film Dooj Ka Chand (1964). The Roshan-Geeta combo will always be remembered for that first hit song from Baware Nain!
