Khwaja Khurshid Anwar

Khwaja Khurshid Anwar is a well-known Music Director, Writer, Producer and Director of movies in the Indian Sub-continent. He made his debut as a music director in A. R. Kardar's Punjabi venture "Kudmai" (1941). His first Hindi film was "Ishara"(1943]. The film gained much popularity from its songs which included "Panghat pe muraliya baje" by Suraiya, "Shabnam kyon neer bahaye" by Gauhar Sultana, and "Dil deke dagha nahin dena" by Vatsala Kumathekar. Some of his other Hindi films were Parakh (1944, with Saraswati Devi), Yateem (1945, with K. Dutta), Aaj Aur Kal (1947), Pagdandi(1947), and Parwaana (1947) which was the last movie in which K. L. Saigal acted, and for which he got the Best Music Director’s award for the year, For "Singaar" (1949) he got the Clare Award for Best Music Director. His later films "Nishaana "(1950) and "Neelam Pari" (1952) added new feathers to his cap.

Geeta ji first sang five solo songs for the film Nishana (1950). "Kaisi murali bajayi shayam ne" is a lovely song with vintage flavor. The melody "Woh rooth gaye dil toot gaya" is said to have inspired a famous song in the year 1951. Tu tu ghar aaja is a song that is a must listen for her fans. Seene ki dhadkan tez hui is also quite delightful. This movie had a fifth song, Ab Bhool Ja which was not released on the records. Khwaja sahab's son Khwaja Irfan Anwar informs us that ecause Khurshid Anwar realized that some violinist gave violin pieces of this song to Husnlal Bhagatram who made that their signature pieces. Although Khurshid Anwar borrowed those pieces from his earlier song of film Singhar( ae bholne wale tujhe ye kon bataaey).Khurshid Anwar must have been pretty pleased with the results of these as he used her voice in his next movie.

Geeta sang seven songs composed by this great composer for the film Neelam Pari (1952). There is a duet each with Mohd. Rafi and G. M. Durrani, 3 female duets with Asha Bhonsle and two solos. Another fine example of range of songs sung by this versatile singer! "Chaahe qismat hum ko rulaaye" is a favorite Rafi-Geeta duet and G M Durrani ably supports Geeta in "Jab tak chamake chand sitaare, tum ho hamare saiyyan hum hain tumhaare". The solo "Raat chandani kare ishaare" is a must listen for Geeta fans! "Ek tu dooji main teeja chand" is a dreamy duet with Asha!

In 1952 he migrated to Pakistan and continued his career as Music Director, Writer, Producer and Director and became one of the most successful personalities of Pakistan Film Industry.

In just two films and about twelve songs, Khurshid Anwar has given such memorable songs to the versatile Geeta!
