S N Tripathi

Actor, singer, composer, story and screenplay writer and film maker. No, we are not talking about the legendary Kishore Kumar here, its Shri Nath (S.N.) Tripathi. He was a man of many talents. S. N. Tripathi's main scope of film music was the much-neglected, much scorned mythologicals to which he brought an aura of credibility thanks to his exquisite tunes based on Indian classical music.

Playback singer Geeta Dutt's association with this veteran composer goes a long way. In her debut year itself, Tripathi ji gave her a song for the film Manasarovar (1946). It was her first song with the legendary singer Mohd. Rafi. The song was "Jai hind, yeh hind ki kahaniyaan" with Binapani Mukherjee as the third singer. The two legendary singers, Geeta Dutt and Mohd. Rafi went on to sing more than 150 duets together in the coming years. A detailed discussion about Geeta's duets with the legendary Mohd. Rafi can be found here.

It seems that Tripathi did not compose any music during the year 1947 and he had just one film “Shri Ram Bhakt Hanuman” in 1948. There is no information if Geeta sang any song for him during these two years. In 1949, we have a beautiful solo “Mere daras deewane nain” for the film Veer Ghatotkach.

It was in 1950 when the association of Tripathi ji and the young talented Geeta started developing. She sang a couple of songs for the film Saudamini and as many as five songs for Meena Kumari starrer Shri Ganesh Mahima that year. In Shri Ganesh Mahima, she had a record 08:21 minute long duet with Mohd. Rafi (Kanha..murali bajayi ho madhuban mein). Her voice is “dancing” with happiness when she sings “Sakhi ri meraa man naache” and is the voice of a proud mother in the song “Taaron ke paalne mein jhoole chaand hamaara re”. The highlight song of this album is none other than her sweet solo “Mere nainon mein preet mere hothon pe geet mere sapnon mein tum hi samaaye”. Listen to the way she calls out “Muralidhar..” at the beginning of the song. This is a must listen and pay particular attention to how she conveys the feelings of the song.

The next year 1951 was of another Meena Kumari starrer Laxmi-Narayan and Tripathi ji entrusted Geeta with another five songs, all solos this time. Once again we have a sweet melody in “Phoolon se kar loon naina chaar unke pyaar ke liye, kaaton se kheloo baar baar unke pyar ke liye”. In Nav Durga (1953) she had two duets with Mohd. Rafi and both of them are sublime melodies. The most popular (and easily available on CDs) song from this album is of course “Aayi biraha ki raat mora tadape jiya mose roothe piya koi man ka sahara nahin”. Geeta puts her heart into this song (another example is a Hemant Kumar composition “Na yeh chaand hoga” for Shart (1954)). One can listen to this song over and over again. A divine melody! A timeless classic!

In 1956, Geeta sang for films like Sati Naag-Kanya, Rajrani Meera and Roop Kumari for Tripathi ji. In the Mahipal-Shakeela starrer Roop Kumari, she has an evergreen duet with the legendary Manna Dey, “Woh dekho udhar chaand nikala gagan mein”. Both the singers complement each other so well and the song has such a lovely classical base. A superb rendition of a great composition by S. N. Tripathi!

The next year, Tripathi had a big commercial success with the film Janam Janam Ke Phere: Alias Sati Anapurna (1957) starring Nirupa Roy, Manahar Desai and Tripathi ji himself. Geeta once again pairs up with Manna Dey for the song “Rang birange phoolon ki jhoome re daliyaan”. For Ram Hanuman Yuddha (1957) Dilip Dholakia accompanies Geeta for another lovely duet “Door gagan par chamke tare”.

Geeta sang four songs each for his two films Jagga Daku and Kavi Kalidas (both in1959). She sings a fast paced song “Teri qasam teri qasam tujhko sanam pyaar kiya re” and then sings another romantic duet “Tu roop ki nagari ka raja” with Manna Dey for Jagga Daku. In Kavi Kalidas, we have the classical “Door desh se koi sapera aaya” and two group songs with Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle.

This brings us to the last phase of Geeta – SNT association. In 1960 she sang a mast duet “Nadi kinare koi pukaare” with Mohd. Rafi and a pleasing solo “Bheegi Bheegi Mehki Mehki Raat Hai” for Chandramukhi and Do Aadmi respectively. The last song she sang for SNT was probably “Dirna tan dir dirna more lage re lage kisise naina” a duet with Asha Bhonsle for the film Shiv Parvati (1962).

From 1946 to 1962, the maestro S. N. Tripathi ji composed close to 50 songs for Geeta. He also composed music for several Bhojpuri films and Geeta sang several songs for him for those films. You can find a more detailed discussion on her Bhojpuri songs here.

It is a well known fact that Geeta did not have much of formal training in classical music nor did she have a legacy behind her (like Lata ji had it from her father Master Deenanath Mangeshkar). Yet this talented, spontaneous and natural singer sang several classical based songs for composers like S. N. Tripathi ji. That’s another feature of Geeta vastly ignored by the critics and music lovers!
