Shankar-Jaikishan
were the most popular musical duo to grace the world
of Hindi Film music. They understood the taste of the
masses, were able to cater to those tastes, and in the
process even molded their tastes. During their tenure
as music directors, they were exceedingly popular and
more than 75 per cent of the films for which they scored
music were resounding hits - many have celebrated silver
jubilees. They worked as assistants to the celebrated
composer pair Husnlal-Bhagatram and imbibed much of
their form and structure, which they successfully employed
in a refined style. Raj Kapoor introduced Shankar-Jaikishan
to the Hindi Film world with Barsaat (1949) and this
team continued to give one after other successful musicals.
After they established themselves, the careers of many
composers of the forties and early fifties were virtually
wiped out. Such was the success of this musical duo
that they composed music for over 100 films between
their prime era from year 1949 to the year 1969.
Shankar-Jaikishan have given very few songs to Geeta
ji, most of them being duets/group songs. She did sing
two songs for them for the Prem Nath-Nutan starrer Parbat
