Ravi
(Ravishankar Sharma) started his career as an assistant
to singer-composer Hemant Kumar. Ravi gives credit to
music director Hemant da who encouraged Ravi to work
as a solo composer and director Devendra Goel (who gave
him break in Geeta Bali starrer Vachan (1955)) for having
shaped his career as a music director. Ravi gave all
the female songs in his debut film to Asha ji and he
has been an Asha loyalist with a few melodies sung by
Lata ji.
Geeta ji has sung very few songs for Ravi, most of them
being duets/group songs. She sang a solo bhajan for
the film Ayodhyapati (1956) and two years later, Ravi
had Geeta sing a club song “O baabu o laala” for Dilli
Ka Thug (1958). This became kind of signature song for
the club songs in which Geeta Dutt got soon typecast
into. Two years later, Geeta sings a simple and sweet
duet “Tumse hi meri zindagi” filmed on Shyama with Mukesh
for Apna Ghar (1960).
Even when Ravi got assignment to compose music for Guru
Dutt’s “Chaudahavin Ka Chand” (1960), Geeta ji was not
giving playback to Waheeda Rehman (who was the leading
actress of the film), so she preferred to sing only
a background song
