N Dutta

Datta Naik, who took the name N. Dutta for the film line, a local resident of Goa, started his film career as a music assistant of the great composer S. D. Burman. He assisted Burmanda in a number of films. N. Dutta was very impressed with the revolutionary songs of lyricist Sahir Ludhiyanvi. When N. Dutta got his first chance to compose independently for Raj Khosla's Milaap (1955), he insisted for Sahir as the lyricist. The result was some very beautifully songs like 'Ye Baharon Ka Sama..' (Hemant, Lata), 'Jaate Ho To Jaao Par Jaoge Kahan..' (Geeta Dutt) etc. The music of Milaap became so popular that N. Dutta came into the category of film industry's most eminent musicians.

He had a very strong and long association with Sahir Ludhiyanvi as his lyiricist in most of his films. N. Dutta was a sensible music director who used minimum orchestra to develop the required atmosphere as expressed in the song. Geeta ji had a great association with him. She sang some beautiful songs in Milaap (1955) and this musical milaap continued for several years.

Geeta Dutt was main singer for Geeta Bali – Dev Anand starrer Milaap (1955). She

sang soft romantic “Chahe bhi joh dil jana na wahan” and threw a naughty question in “Jaate ho toh jaao par jaaoge kahan, babuji tum aisa dil paaoge kahan”. She cajoles in “Humse bhi kar lo kabhi kabhi toh meethi meethi do baatein”. The pick of the album is of course her fast paced duet with Mohd. Rafi “Bachana zara yeh zamana hain bura”. In the first assignment itself N. Dutta has given such a variety of songs to Geeta Dutt.

We get a foot tapping number in “Sadke teri chaal ke, kajra wajara daal ke” sung by Mohd. Rafi and Geeta for the film Mr. X (1957). N. Dutta got a big film for B. R. Chopra banner and the name of the film was Sadhana (1958). Lata Mangeshkar sang that meaningful song “Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko” for this film. Geeta Dutt sang the divine bhajan “Tora Manawa kyon ghabaraye re” filmed on Leela Chitnis. She also sang a tandem of this song with Mohd. Rafi. The solo song is another regular entry on most of the CD compilations of Geeta, but the duet is a relatively lesser heard one.

The next year, Geeta gets to sing several duets for N. Dutta. “Jaate jaate isharon se maar gayi re” from Bhai Behen (1959) is another foot tapping number. With Kishore Kumar she went on to sing the song “Jab jab tujhko chhua, dhak dhak dhak dil hua” for the film Jaalsaz (1959). This song was considered bold (as per the society standards in those days) and was removed from the film. In 1960, N. Dutta got assignment for a low budget Shakila starrer film Dr. Shaitan (1960). Geeta sang two solos and two duets for this film. “Main hoon atom bomb” is a highly westernized club song, sung effectively by Geeta. The same year she sings a duet with Mohd. Rafi praising the fruit Chiku (Sapota) for the film Rickshwala (1960). The song goes like this:”Pandit ho yah lala, yah Gandhi topiwala, joh bhi khaaye chiku bhaiyya kehlaaye matawala”. Rafi and Geeta are at their best in describing the benefits of eating the fruit in this sweet funny song!

The film Sachche Moti released in the year 1962 saw Geeta Dutt singing two distinctly different songs. In “Mere munne re seedhi raah pe chalna”, she is a mother taking care of her child and giving advice about how to lead the life. For the same film, she sings “Arre oh deewane khushi ke zamane phir nahin aane re maan bhi jaa”. That is the versatility of legendary Geeta Dutt!

N. Dutta composed probably the only Qawwali song sung by Geeta Dutt for the film Awara Abdullah (1963). The song is “Ham hain awara to kya hai dil to duniya se juda hai “a duet with Mohd. Rafi. Even in 1964, Geeta sang a melodious duet with Suman Kalyanpur for N. Dutta for the film Chandi Ki Deewar (“Mohe la de chunariya lal ke aise nahin roop khilata”.

The Milaap of compositions of N. Dutta and the voice of Geeta ji created some Sachche Moti. Let us enjoy the melodious fruits of the Sadhana of these two great artists.
