S S Mohinder

S. S. Mohinder (or some times referred as S. Mohinder) is a name not known to many music lovers in spite of the fact that he gave melodious music to several Hindi and Punjabi films from as early as 1948 and till as late as early 90’s. Mohinder Singh Sarna was born in a small town in Punjab, now a part of Pakistan. His famous songs are “Tera kaam hain jalna parawane “(Mohd. Rafi for the film Paapi) and “Guzara hua zamana aata nahi dobara” (Lata Mangeshkar for the film Shirin Farhad). S. Mohinder got the Presidential Annual Award for the best music for his musical score for the super hit Punjabi Sikh religion based movie “Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai” in the year 1970.

Geeta ji has sung relatively fewer songs for S. Mohinder. Their earliest association was for a duet “Do naina tumhaare pyaare “sung by Geeta Dutt and Hemant Kumar for the Shyama starrer film Shrimatiji (1952).This film’s music was composed by S. Mohinder, Jimmy and Basant Prakash. This duet with Hemantda is a simple sweet romantic number and is one of the popular songs of Geeta Dutt.

In the following years, Geeta sang a few more songs for Mohinder ji, most of them being duets. “Mera dil tujhpe qurban hain” with Mohd. Rafi, from Naya Paisa (1958), is a foot tapping number and a must listen! She has another fun song with Asha Bhonsle (S. Mohinder’s favorite singer) for the film Mahalon ke Khwab (1960). They sing and praise Mr. Paisa in the song “Is duniya mein sab si achhi cheez hain kya ji paisa”.

Most importantly Geeta ji has sung two Punjabi shabads from the holy Guru Granth Saheb under the music direction of S. Mohinder after taking permission from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)

Shabad is a style similar to bhajan. These songs are popular among the Sikhs. The word "shabad" literally means "word". As such it represents the verbal description of the nature of God. This is generally from the Guru Granth Sahib which is the holy book of the Sikhs. The shabad is also referred to as "Gurbani" which literally means "Message of the Teacher".

Geeta Dutt has sung the following shabads:

1) Kahe re ban khojan jaaoon
2) Ram siun kar preet

This non-film work of Geeta Dutt is known to very few music lovers.
