Madan Mohan

It’s a well known fact that composer “Ghazal ka Shehzada” Madan Mohan gave maximum songs to Lata ji. He was her "Raakhi" brother and Lata ji also has highest respects and regards for Madan bhaiyya and did full justice to all of his songs. A class composer in its own, Madan Mohan is always remembered for his musical hits like Madahosh, Aashiyana (both 1951), Dekh Kabira Roya , Gateway of India (both 1957), Anpadh (1962) , Jahan Aaraa (1964) and many more!

Geeta Dutt sang about 20 odd songs from Madan Mohan starting from "Sachhi Bata Batane Mein" from one of his first films as composer (Adaa - 1951) till late fifties . One song composed by Madan Mohan for Geeta which will always be remembered is "Aye dil mujhe bata dein tu kis pe aa gaya hain" from Bhai Bhai (1956) picturized on Shyama.

The musical score for Filmistan’s Shabistan (1951) was jointly done by Madan Mohan and C. Ramchandra. Madan Mohan has composed two lovely duets of Geeta and Talat, the first one being naughty (Hain yeh mausam-e-bahar) and the other purely true-blue romantic (Kaho ek baar mujhe tumse pyaar).

On the success of "Aye dil mujhe bata dein tu kis pe aa gaya hain" from Bhai Bhai (1956), we have as many as 10 songs composed by Madan Mohan for Geeta Dutt between 1956 and 1957. "Duniya Ke Saath Chal pyaare" filmed on Nadira for Dev Anand's Pocket Maar and "Shaam Ka Aanchal Dhalka" from Fifty Fifty showcases the sensuality of Geeta's voice. Film Samundar released in 1957 had Geeta singing a lovely duet "Le gaya dekho dehko dil bhi hamara" with Mohd. Rafi and another lovely club song "Dil ko lagaayen yeh gawaara bhi nahin". Madan Mohan called Geeta again for couple of more club songs for Jaagir and Night Club released in 1959, but in Chandan (1958) he had a winner in "Aankh milane ke liye". Just like the song from Bhai Bhai, this is a free flowing sweet melody coming from Madan Mohan. A song from the film Night Club “Kahan phir hum kahan phir tum, kahan yeh rate” is a lesser heard club song, but Geeta puts just the right sensuousness in this one.

We will always remember the Madan Mohan – Geeta Dutt association for the lovely song “Aye dil mujhe bata dein” which starts with a beautiful humming by Geeta ji. The film Bhai Bhai has many other melodious songs like “Kadar jaane na”, “Mera chhota sa dekho yeh sansar hain” and “Sharabi jaa jaa” sung by the nightingale Lata ji. The popularity of Geeta’s song is a clear indication of her spontaneity and power of conveying the essence of a song!
