Kalyanaji Veerji Shah began his with Samrat
Chandragupta (1959) produced by the late Subhash Desai. The first film where his younger brother Anandji
joined him was Satta Bazar the same year. With the super success of songs from this debut film, the
composer duo too was Lata loyalists
Still there are about ten odd songs composed by Kalyanaji
Anandaji for Geeta ji. She sang duets with Manna Dey
(Baabu bol kaisa roka - Pyase Panchhi) and Subir Sen
(Kya kaha zara phir kaho - Gangu). Her duets with Mohd.
Rafi (“Oonchi edi walon ne” and “Yeh gora gora mukhda”)
are foot tapping numbers, another must listen for music
lovers.
Passport (1960) is probably a standout film where she
sang as many as three solos (all club songs) for Kalyanaji
Anandji. It is a rather odd album by them, it does not
have any Mukesh song (an early favorite of theirs),
and has all the three solos by Geeta Dutt, though the
only duet and it is a beautiful composition (Saaze dil
ched de) was given to Lata and Mohd. Rafi. Interesting
that the director of the film was Pramod Chakravorthy,
who had directed 12 O'Clock(1958). Fresh from the success
