Composer
Ghulam Mohammed is a classical case where throughout
the life man lives with the hope of getting his desires
fulfilled, but till the end he achieves nothing and
it is after his death only that people realize his worth.
He worked as an assistant with great music directors
like Anil Biswas and Naushad for over 12 years. His
first movie as solo composer was Tiger Queen (1947).
He went on to give music in many memorable films and
even won the 1955 National Film Award for Best Music
Direction for his film Mirza Ghalib (1954). His songs
from his last film Pakeezah (1971) are still considered
some of the all time great songs in Hindi Film music.
Geeta Dutt has sung relatively few songs with this veteran
music director, the majority of the songs being from
the film Dil Ki Basti (1949) starring Masood, Lalita
Pawar and Nigar Sultana. In this album, Geeta sings a
fast paced duet with the veteran singer Zohrabai and
two romantic duets with the melodious G. M. Durrani
(including the title song of the film). She has sung
three more solos, but the pick of the album is her romantic
chhed-chhad duet “Naazuk dil hain tod na dena” with
G. M. Durrani. The same year she sang “Koi pukare piya
piya oh sajan teri yaad mein” |
