Bulo C Rani

A talented composer who gave a first hit song to Mukesh ji (Badariya baras gayi us paar – Moorty(1945)), an evergreen score of Jogan (1950) (A total of 15 songs with 12 of them sung by Geeta Dutt) and gave memorable song “Parwanon se preet seekh li” to Suraiyya in Bilwamangal(1954) is a forgotten name in the history of Hindi film music. His last hit song was “Hamen to loot liya milke husn Walon ne” sung by Ismail Azad for the film Al-Hilal (1958). Here we are discussing his association with Geeta ji, which spanned from late forties till late fifties. Geeta Dutt must have sung approximately 60 to 75 songs for Bulo C Rani. His real name was Bulochand Chandiramani, but for the film line he opted for a shorter name.

The mere mention of Bulo C Rani is equivalent to talk about the Ranjit Movitone classic Jogan (1950). The music of this film, in a nutshell, is a Geeta Dutt paradise. It's one of the single biggest assembly of Geeta beauties one can ever come across- 12 out of impressive count of 15 are in her voice, and 10 out of these 12 are solos (the other two are with a chorus and a 'Male Voice' respectively). (The other notable one is the film Darogaji (1949) where she sings all the 12 songs, once again composed by none other than Bulo C Rani).Six of these are Meera bhajans

(not surprising, since the movie is about the legendary poet-saint), set beautifully to tune by Bulo C Rani, and it seems like Geeta was born to sing them. Every song in this Ranjit classic is a treasure-one could well spend a long time discussing nothing but this soundtrack.

The music of the film 'Jogan' (1950) was a landmark in Bulo's career. His composing skill enabled him to enhance the inherent charm of Meerabai's traditional bhajans such as 'Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol re', 'Main to giridhar ke ghar jaaoon ', 'Damag damag dole naiya' and ' Jogi mat ja, mat ja'. Even the Holi song ('Rang daaro ri') and the playful song “Chanda khele aankh michouli” were no less appealing. It would not be inappropriate to say that more than Dilip Kumar and Nargis in the film it was Bulo's music which turned out to be the real star.

Here is the listing of these evergreen gems from Jogan, each of them a masterpiece in its own :

Chanda khele aankh michauli
Daaro re rang daaro re rasiya
Dagmag dagmag dole naiya
Dwaar khule man mandir ke ..Sakhi ri Chitchor nahin aaye
Ghoonghat ke pat khol re tohe piya milenge
Hey ri main to prem deewaani
Jogi mat jaa mat jaa paaon padoon main tere
Main to girdhar ke ghar jaaun
Pyaare darshan dijo aaj
Gend kheloon gend kheloon
Uthat chale avdhoot
Zara thaam jaa tu ae saavan

In fact, the Bhajan “Mat ja mat ja jogi” is a personal favorite of Geeta Dutt herself. In early 1957 while selecting the ten best songs that she has sung, Geeta Dutt made a mention of this.

An year before the release of Jogan, Bulo C Rani had already developed complete trust in the vocals of Geeta Dutt by composing all the 12 songs of the film Darogaji (1949) in her voice. This is a record and later Shanker Jaikishen composed all songs of 3 films in Lata ji’s voice and then O P Nayyar composing the same in Asha ji’s voice. The film Darogaji was produced and directed by Akhtar Hussain (Brother of actress Nargis) and Nargis's other brother Anwar Hussain also played a major role in the film. The film starred Jairaj (the legendary actor from the era of mime movies) and of course Nargis playing the role of a flower vendor (Phoolwali). Once again these 12 songs have a great variety of flavor and are a must listen

Ab kaun sunega hai re dukhi dil ki kahaani
Apne sajan ke man mein samaai re
Ho jawaaniyaan nigodi sataaye hai ghoonghat mera khul khul jaaye
Jeena mushkil marna mushkil bechain hai dil
Kotwaal daroga apna ki ab dar kaahe dar kaahe ka
Le jaa le jaa baabu yeh meri nishaani
Mere man ke gagan mein aaj chhitaki chaandni
Meri soyi preet jaga ke bichhad mat jaana
Mori tujhse ulajh gayi ankhiyaan
Piya milan ke din aaye
Aasman se door tara ho gaya
Naiya mori majhdhaar hai koi nahin hai khevanhaar

The films in late forties had more inclination towards sad songs, so it is natural that she sang “Ab kaun sunega haye re dukhe dil ki kahani”, yet “Kotwal daroga apna ke ab dar kaahe ka mohe” is a very naughty playful song. Geeta’s voice could turn so youthful and natkhat in song like “Jwaniya nigodi sataaye, ghoonghat mora khul khul jaaye”. And then we have romantic songs like “Apne sajan ke man mein samayi re” and “Mori tujhse ulajh gayi ankhiyan”. The flower vendor song where Nargis is singing into buying her flowers “Le jaa le jaa le jaa baabu yeh meri nishani” once again proves that there is much more to Geeta Dutt than “Mera sundar sapna beet gaya” and here we are talking of 1949, much before Baazi happened.

Apart from these two great musicals, Geeta continued to be Bulo’s favorite singer. She sang for his films like Pyar ki Baatein, Baghdad, Nanand Bhojai, Bhool Bhulaiyan, Nirmal, Nazare, Garibi, Lavangi, Aabroo, Husn Ka Chor and Badshah Salamat in late forties and early fifties. She sang for him as late as Black Tiger (1960) and Haqdar (1964). Her duet with Mukesh ji “Mast chandani jhoom rahi hain” from Pyaar Ki Baaten (1951) is a vintage classic and pleasing on the ears.

Bulo’s last film as a composer was Sunehere Qadam (1966). It was an irony of life and fate that the song he composed in his last film 'Sunhare Qadam' was 'Maangne se jo maut mil jaati, Kaun jeeta zamane men...'(in the voice of Lata ji).
