Pandit S D Batish

Pandit Shiv Dayal (S.D.) Batish has been a stalwart on the Indian music scene since 1936. He was a true master of the various vocal and instrumental styles of North Indian music, including Bhajans, Geet, Thumri, Ghazals, Film Sangeet, etc. Some of his outstanding films are Betab, Bahu Beti, Toofan, Harjeet, Tipu Sultan, Ham Bhi Kuch Kam Nahin, and Amar Keertan. His songs have been sung by such top artists as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Talat Mahmood, Mohd. Rafi, Sudha Malhotra, Manna Dey and Geeta Dutt. Some of his all time hit songs are : Pagadi Sambhal Jatta, Khamosh Nigahen and Aakhen Kehe Gayi Dil Ki Baat. Apart from composing music, he was a renowned singer and sang songs for composers like Roshan and S. D. Burman.

Geeta Dutt sang under the music direction of this veteran singer-music director in about six films. She sang sang seven of the total of eight songs from the Geeta Bali starrer film Bahu Beti (1952). This album clearly showcases the versatility of the voice named Geeta Dutt under the baton of Pandit Batish ji.

For this film, she sings an emotional Rakhi song to express the helplessness of a sister who is not able to meet her brother on this auspicious day of Rakshabandhan. The song is "Kaise le aaoon rakhiyan main bhaiyya more paaon mein bedi padi". Then we have a marriage song "Gori dulhaniya mori gori dulhaniya" and typical fifties sad song "Dil jala yaaden jali ek ek tamanna jal gayi". The she sings a romantic duet with the composer-singer Batish himself ("Nazdeek na aana na mujhe haath lagana ke yeh aadaat nahin achchi"). The she sings a scintillating mast song. The wordings of this song were found to be objectionable by censor board in those days and the song was removed from the film. Listen to geeta at her naughtiest best in "Mose chanchal jawani sambhali nahin jaye".

In one of the interviews, Pandit ji talked about an interesting episode about Geeta Dutt. He mentioned that when Geeta would be attending the meetings of the singers association, Guru Dutt would be waiting outside. Those were the days when their love was blooming.

In the year 1954, she sang a memorable song “Kadam mere dagmaga rahe hain” for Pandit ji for the film Toofan. She sang two bhajan based songs for the film Amar Kirtan the same year. Geeta sang two songs for the film Haar-Jeet (1954). One was a solo and another was a duet with upcoming Mubarak Beghum (probably her only duet with Geeta Dutt). We welcome any one having the information about any other songs of Geeta ji sung under the baton of Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish ji to send to us. The details of communication are here.

Towards the end of the fifties, we have a sizzling number from the team of composer Batish ji and singer Geeta Dutt. The song is “Aake shamma ke kareeb joh parwana palat jaaye” from the film Ek Armaan Mera (1959). There is not much of information available if she sang for Batish ji for any other films.
