Her marital problems were taking a heavy toll on Geetaji. It appeared on the surface that this may slow down her singing assignments, but she still managed to sing in 30 or so movies. Number of songs she sang in these went down considerably, but she was still busy. She was very talented and music composers of the time were very much aware of this. Most of the songs she sang were unequivocal hits and this did not go unnoticed by them. They were still willing to put up with her tardiness or irregular attendance for recordings just to have her sing. It was a sure thing, like money in the bank. There was so much magic in her melodious voice that they were willing to forgive her transgressions.
Burmanda, who had Asha Bhosle singing most of his songs at this time, was still fond of Geetaji’s superlative talented vocals. This found her singing in four of his films. These were “Ek Ke Baad Ek” (two duets), “Kala Bazaar” (two duets), “Manzil” (a duet), and “Miya Bibi Raazi” (a duet). Even though all these were popular songs, yet there were few standouts among these. The duet, “Rimjhim Ke Tarane Leke”, with Mohd. Rafi in “Kala Bazaar” makes as if monsoons came alive. Here she was singing for Madhubala. In 1955 she sang a solo for Madhubala, “Thandi Hawa Kaali Ghata”, in “Mr. & Mrs. ‘55” (O.P. Nayyar was its composer). That song was like a cool evening breeze of a hot summer night. One can feel when Geetaji was singing for Madhubala that charming free spiritedness and engaging exuberance imprinted in the song all over. Another duet, “Chup Ke Se Mile Pyaase Pyaase”, from “Manzil”, again with Rafi Saheb, is one of those gems. It was beautifully composed by Burmanda. The song starts slowly with Geetaji’s soft-spoken and sweet words culminating in a breezy song. A beautiful listening experience.
Chitraguptji was there again in 1960. Geetaji sang in five of his films during that year. These were “Baraat” (two duets), “Maa Baap” (a duet), “Naache Nagin Baaje Been” (a duet), “Police Detective” (a duet), and “Zimbo Shehar Mein” (a solo and a duet).

For Avinash Vyas, in “Bhakta Raj” Geetaji sang two solos and a duet. Hansraj Behl is another Geetaji music director who had her sing in two of his films. These were “Miss Good Night” a solo and “Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh” (a duet). In “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere”, for which Kalyanji & Anandji provided the music, Geetaji had a solo and a duet. Khayyam composed couple of solos of Geetaji for his film “Bombai Ki Billi”. She sang a duet in S. Mohinder’s “Mehlon Ke Khwab” .
For Hemant Kumar’s “Duniya Jhukti Hai” Geetaji sang a duet., “Gum Sum Sa Ye Jahan” This was with Hemantda himself. This is one lovely duet. The combination of Geetaji and Hemantda provided several winners. This duet also was one of them. The appeal of these duets partly stems from the contrast in the voices of these two great singers.
N. Dutta was a beneficiary of Geetaji’s talents where he utilized her singing abilities in two of his films in 1960. These were “Dr. Shaitan” (two solos and two duets) and “Rickshawala” (a duet). The duet “Pandit Ho Ya Laala” with Mohd. Rafi in “Rickshawala” is a fun-filled song that was sung in a very light vein.
Geetaji sang for composer Ravi’s two movies. These were “Apna Ghar” (a solo) and “Chaudhvin Ka Chand” (a solo). The latter was produced by her husband Guru Dutt. The songs in this movie were all major hits. All other female songs except this solo, “Balam Se Milan Hoga”, were sung by Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shamshad Begum. This was a clear reflection of the problems Geetaji was having in her marriage. She could sing just one song in her own husband’s movie.
S.N. Tripathi was another music director who consistently utilized Geetaji’s singing talents. In 1960, he had her sing in two of his movies. These were “Chandramukhi” (a duet) and “Do Aadmi” (a solo). Both these songs were popular. The duet, “Nadi Kinare Koi Pukaare” with Mohd. Rafi was a melodious duet. Tripathiji was typecast into mostly mythological type of movies but some of his compositions had the ring of melody that stirs feelings deep in your heart. Geetaji’s solo, “Bheegi Bheegi Mehki Mehki Raat Hai” leaves you in a similar state of contentful happiness.
Geetaji sang in two movies for Sardar Malik in 1960. In the history making “Saranga” she sang a couple of “dohe”. She also sang a duet with Mohd. Rafi in “Superman” .
There are several other music directors with whom Geetaji worked in 1960. These include Salil Chowdhury in “Raat Ki Uljhan” (a duet), Shankar & Jaikishan in “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (Geetaji was one of the five singers who sang this song), Snehal Bhatkar in “Chhabili” (a duet with the great actress Nutan), and Usha Khanna in “Hum Hindustani” (a solo) .
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1960 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

In 1961, in spite of all the problems they were having Geetaji and her husband, Guru Dutt, were still living together. There was still something left between the two. These brief moments of harmony were giving her enough strength to continue with her passion, singing. Her assignments were slightly down. She was doing only a very limited amount of singing. She still was able to sing in many movies, most of them were prior commitments. Details are available here for 15 of the 31 movies she sang in 1961.
By this time most of the music directors who were thronging to have her sing in their films were slowly retracting. She still had few of them left. One of them was Chitragupt. She sang in four movies for him in 1961. These were “Bada Aadmi” (a solo), “Hum Matwale Naujawan” (two duets), “Tel Malish Boot Polish” (a duet), and “Zabak” (a triplet). One of the duets from “Hum Matwale Naujawan” sung by Geetaji and Mukesh, “Beete Nahin Raat Sanam” is a beauty that is remembered even today for its romanticism and sweetness.
In “Pyaar Ki Pyaas” Vasant Desai gave Geetaji four songs to sing. One of these was a solo, two were duets, and the third one was a triplet. Usually productive Tripathiji composed music for only one movie that year. In “Piya Milan Ki Aas” Geetaji sang a duet for him. Kalyanji & Anandji were another pair of music directors for whom Geetaji sang in two movies. These were “Passport” (three solos) and “Pyaase Panchhi” (a duet) .
The other music directors for which Geetaji sang in 1961 include G.S. Kohli in “Mr. India” (two solos), Khayyam in “Shola Aur Shabnam” (a duet and a d triplet), Nashad in “Pyaar Ki Dastan” (two duets), Roshan in “Warrant” (a solo), S. Madan in “Batwara” (a duet), Shankar & Jaikishan in “Karodepati” (a duet), and Vinod in “Dekhi Teri Bombai” (a solo). Both of the duets composed by Nashadji were sung by Geetaji and Rafi Saheb. These two are very delightful numbers, especially the duet “Tu Rie Rie Rie” .
Geetaji also sang in several other movies in 1961 for which details are currently not available. These include “Anarbala”, “Bhagwan Balaji”, “Dark Street”, “Diamond King”, “Gypsy Girl”, “Howrah Express”, “Kaanch Ki Gudiya”, “Khiladi”, “Kismat Palat Ke Dekh”, “Matlabi Duniya”, “Miss Chaalbaaz”, “Raam Leela”, “Razia Sultana”, “Room No. 17”, “Saaya”, and “Wazi-E-Alam” .

1962 was another eventful year in Geetaji’s life. The proof that there was love still existed between Geetaji and Guru Dutt, their third child, a daughter named Nina, was born in August. This however did not solve their problems. The impending gloom and doom was fast nearing and it was just about impossible to stop it. Both of them started living separately. Both of them took to the bottle to find solace. Neither one could find any peace or tranquility in their lives. Young but restless, both scaled the ladder of high achievement only to tumble down. Both had so much to offer to each other and to the rest of the world, yet none of the promise they possessed completely fulfilled, thrown away succumbed to the common worldly pressures.
This was the first time after her career skyrocketed to unprecedented fame and fortune, Geetaji found herself with very few offers to work with. Personal problems, new baby, and drinking all contributed to this. She worked in only 11 movies that year. She sang in more movies in 1947, her second year as a singer than in 1962. Even Chitragupt for whom she sang in her career a maximum number of songs than anyone else, managed to give her only a single a solo in “Aankh Micholi”. In “Gangu” she sang three duets for Kalyanji & Anandji. N. Dutta had her sing two solos in “Sachhe Moti”. She sang a duet in “Godaan” for Pandit Ravi Shankar. In Salil Chowdhury’s “Half Ticket” she recorded a duet with Kishore Kumar.
She had a beautiful duet in her mentor’s movie S.D. Burman’s “Dr. Vidya”. In “Shiv Parvati” she sang a duet for Tripathiji.
But the songs she will be remembered the most were for her husband’s film “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam”. Hemant Kumar composed its beautiful music. Geetaji had sung three heart rendering magnificent and matchless solos for that movie. In the solo “Piya Aiso Jiya Mein” Geetaji was at once mischievous, playful, and complaining to her lover all at the same time. Geetaji breathes life into the song and becomes the actress for whom she was lip synching, great Meena Kumari. This song is one for the ages. Now in the other solo, “Na Jaao Saiyan”, she brings out the drunken and sensual singing experience. Hemantda’s music with intermittent pauses as the song progresses and the slur in the singing of Geetaji, was it really the magnificence personified or was she drunk when singing to bring in this effect? It is as close to reality as it can get to. The third song is the one done with a haunting tone, “Koi Door Se Awaaz Di Chale Aao”. One can feel the pain and suffering behind the melancholic melody underlining that song. No one can sing this real, this hurt, this drunk. Only Geetaji could.
Geetaji also sang in 1962 in “Baghdad Ki Raatein”, “Deccan Queen”, “Neeli Aankhen”, and “Sri Ganesh”. Details of the songs in these movies are currently not available.

The decadence is now completely set in. Geetaji’s fortunes are on the fast decline. She was withdrawing herself from everything. She got separated from her husband. She still had custody of all her three children. Not many offers were coming her way. Everyone who worked with her before were shying away from her. Without singing as an outlet she was getting herself isolated.
Amidst all this, Geetaji was able to sing in only six movies. These were Chitragupt’s “Band Master” (a duet), Ravi’s “Aaj Aur Kal” (a triplet) and “Grihasthi” (a solo), N. Dutta’s “Awara Abdulla” (two duets), Hansraj Behl’s “Ek Tha Alibaba” (two solos), and S.N. Tripathi’s “Pareeksha” (two solos and a duet) .
1963 was the last time she was singing for Chitragupt her staunch supporter through out her magnificent career. She was also singing for the last time for Hansraj Behl who also has been her ardent supporter over the years. She did not sing too many songs for Ravi, but this was the last time she was also singing for him. In Geetaji’s song book many of these musical chapters were coming to an end.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1963 is summarized in the table shown below. Please note that this information is not complete.

1964 was a devastatingly eventful year in Geetaji’s life. On October 10, Guru Dutt died of an overdose of sleeping pills. He was only 37. So young. So talented. Such untimely death. Life isn’t just fair. Geetaji suffered a mental breakdown immediately after her husband’s death. It was evident that she still loved him and his death was too much to bear. Her mental state was so bad that she couldn’t recognize her own children. It took her little over three months to overcome her loss and its accompanying grief. Already in financial straits, she found her husband left behind several debts and unpaid bills. Her children were still young, the oldest being only 10 years old by now. She alienated everyone before this calamity struck. She needed some close friends to comfort her. But no one was available. She was a very lonely lady.
Geetaji was able to sing in few movies before Guru Dutt’s death. She sang in about eight movies altogether. She sang a solo for one of her old friends, Bulo C. Rani. He is the one who had Geetaji sing back to back 12 songs in “Darogaji” in 1949 and another 12 songs in “Jogan” in 1950.
Burmanda, her mentor and well-wisher had recorded only one duet of Geetaji in 1964. This was “Main Tere Pyaar Mein” from “Ziddi”. This movie was made by Pramod Chakravarty, her brother-in-law. Still Geetaji sang only this duet as Lataji took all the laurels, rightfully, for the solos she sang for the movie. It was that difficult for Geetaji to sing songs in her own peoples’ movies. She became so undependable that she lost trust of her own people. This will be the last time Geetaji will sing for Burmanda, who was instrumental for her meteoric rise to fame and fortune.
N. Dutta, who was another music director over the years had Geetaji sing songs for his films, had her sing a duet in “Chandi Ki Deewar”. Again, this will be the last time she will be singing for him. She also sang for Roshan for the last time a duet in “Dooj Ka Chand” .
Geetaji also sang during 1964 in movies “Chakravarti Vikramaditya”, “Mahasati Behula”, “Marvel Man”, and “Tarzan And Captain Kishore”. Details of the songs Geetaji sang for these movies is currently not available.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1964 is summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.

By early 1965 Geetaji recovered from the mental breakdown she suffered after her husband’s unexpected death. Shattered and devastated, she was slowly trying put her life together again, one piece at a time. She was facing a helpless situation. Day by day she was becoming hopeless. Whatever comfort she found it was when she was around her children or in alcohol. The situation was already in dire straits.
Amidst all this there was hardly anyone coming forward to have her sing in their films. Her great singing voice was still intact. But people had doubts. As a consequence she worked in only four movies during 1965.
In 1965, she sang for an old friend, Bulo C. Rani, for the last time in her life, in the movie “Chhupa Rustom”. For another old friend, Hansraj Behl, she performed a solo. The movie was “Sikander-E-Azam”. This will be the last time she will be singing for him also. For Daan Singh she sang a solo in “Mere Humnasheen”. She sang two solos and a duet (all the same song) for J.P. Kaushik in “Asmaan Mahal”. The song “Aye Raat Zara Aahista Guzar” was a smash hit. Geetaji had still so much going with her vocal abilities that even in a handful of songs she sang she could still belt out chartbusters.
Geetaji’s singing history for films in 1965 is summarized in the table given below. Please note that this information is not complete.

There is so little activity went on for Geetaji during the years of 1966 to 1969. It is so hard to believe that a great talent like Geetaji, who ruled the world of singing, who mesmerized music loving people all over India, went into obscurity and oblivion during these last years of her singing. It is such a heartbreaking story to think of so much talent going completely unnoticed, unrecognized and bypassed. Geetaji, who once took the nation by storm with her God-given gifted voice, was no more recognized as a part of the main-stream playback singing group.
Still Geetaji sang in six movies in 1966. Here are the details of these. For Jimmi’s “Duniya Hai Dilwalon Ki” she had a duet with Minu Purshottam. For Basant Parakah’s “Hum Kahan Jaa Rahe Hain” she had a duet with Mahendra Kapoor. In Robin Banerjee’s “Husn Ka Ghulam” she sang a solo. In S. Mohinder’s “Professor X” she had a solo. For C. Arjun’s “Sushila” (“she sang a duet with Mohd. Rafi. Finally for Kanu Roy’s “Uski Kahani” she recorded a solo.
In 1967, Geetaji sang in four different movies and a fifth one that was a reissue of “Sachche Moti”, this time under a different name “Rajoo”. The movies she sang that were released in 1967 were Dhaniram’s “Awara Ladki” (a solo), Jaidev’s “Hamare Gham Se Mat Khelo” (a solo), a solo in Vedpal Verma’s “Maya Sundari”, for Jimmi’s “Pyaar Ki Kahani” she sang a duet with Mohd. Rafi and also a solo. In N. Dutta’s “Rajoo” she sang two solos.
During 1967 Geetaji acted as the leading lady in a Bengali movie called “Badhubaran”. This was released in February 1967. It was directed by Dilip Nag. The music was composed by Kamal Dasgupta. Her leading man in the movie was Pradeep Kumar. Rakhi Biswas played the role of younger Geetaji in the movie. Ms. Biswas became a character actress in Hindi of good reputation. She was married to lyricist Gulzarji and was known as Rakhee Gulzar. Like rest of her life during this time in her career, this movie with Geetaji as its leading lady had a dismal showing.
In 1968, Geetaji sang a duet with Suman Kalyanpur and Mohd.Rafi for Shankar & Jaikishan in “Sajan Ki Galiyan”. However this film, a Sadhna-Dev Anand starrer never got released. This same song was later used in “Film Hi Film” released in 1983. This was the only movie of record for the year 1968.
In 1969 she sang in just one movie. It was in Ravi’s “Hanuman Chalisa” (a solo) .
Geetaji’s singing history for films during the years 1966-1969 are summarized in the table starting on the next page. Please note that this information is not complete.
